Weißmainfelsen
The Weißmainfelsen are a mighty group of granite rocks on the eastern slope of the Ochsenkopf in the Hohe Fichtelgebirge (Northeast Bavaria). The highest point is at an altitude of 929 m . The rocks consist of core granite shaped by wool sack weathering and are a protected natural monument .
Tourist development
The Weißmainfelsen are located on the Mittelweg and Quellenweg hiking trails of the Fichtelgebirgsverein . The viewpoint can also be reached on the Goetheweg, which leads from Karches (part of the municipality of Bischofsgrün ) to the rocks. Stone steps and stairs have led to the lookout rock since 1878, there is a limited view of the Großer Waldstein , the Schneeberg , the Kosseine and the basalt cones near Kemnath . An overview board made from ox head proterobas makes orientation easier.
Former mine
On the northeast side of the rock there are said to be the remains of a mine shaft, named Venediger tunnel after the Venetians . There is a small rock cave at the rock group west towards the Weißmainquelle .
Surname
The name of the rock group was previously assigned to "wise men", the druids , which is why it was called "White Man's Rock ". But it is related to the nearby source of the White Main.
