The white-backed anemonefish ( Amphiprion akallopisos ) lives in the coral reefs of the western and eastern Indian oceans . It has two disjoint distribution areas there, in the western Indian Ocean along the African coast from Mozambique to the extreme tip of the Horn of Africa , near Madagascar , the Comoros and the Seychelles , as well as in the eastern Indian Ocean in the Andaman Sea , near Sumatra , in the Java Sea and on the coast of southwestern Thailand . It is absent in the central Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka and the Maldives .
The fish accept two symbiotic anemone species as partners.

- and Mertens anemone ( Stichodactyla mertensii )
features
The body, anal and pectoral fins are orange. The dorsal and caudal fins are white. A white longitudinal stripe begins at the muzzle and runs along the base of the dorsal fin to the caudal fin. The dorsal fin has eight to nine hard and 17 to 20 soft rays, the anal fin has two hard and twelve to 14 soft rays. Amphiprion akallopisos becomes up to eleven centimeters long.
It is very similar to the orange anemonefish ( Amphiprion sandaracinos ) and differs from it in the different number of fin spines, the white caudal fin, which is orange in the orange anemonefish, and the narrower white longitudinal stripe on the head. The teeth of the white-backed anemonefish are designed as incisors, while those of Amphiprion sandaracinos have a conical shape. In the wild, both fish species can only be confused on the coasts of Java and southeastern Sumatra, as the areas of distribution only overlap there.
