Prince of Hesse winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Prinz von Hessen winery is located on the south-eastern outskirts of Johannisberg in the Rheingau and was acquired in 1957 by Philipp Landgraf von Hessen for the Hessian House Foundation . The trademark of the winery is the coat of arms of the princes and landgraves of Hesse, the red and white striped lion of Heinrich I.

The winery is run today by Donatus Prince of Hesse and his director Bärbel Weinert.

Acreage

At the time of acquisition, the estate in the Rheingau wine-growing region comprised 7 hectares of vines, which increased sharply in the following years and has now leveled off at 33 hectares. When the location was classified in 1999, 22 hectares, i.e. almost 70% of the vineyard area, were classified as first crop .

The products of the Prinz von Hessen winery mainly mature in the Johannisberger Klaus , Winkeler Hasensprung , Winkeler Jesuitengarten and Kiedricher Sandgrub sites . 90% of the vineyards are with Riesling planted, along with building the winery Pinot Blanc , Merlot and Pinot Noir on.

restructuring

Bärbel Weinert has been the winery director at the Prinz von Hessen winery since October 2018.

After the purchase of the winery in 1957 with 7 hectares, it was enlarged over the following years to 47 hectares of vineyard area. Later, areas were given up that did not match the winery geographically and / or qualitatively, the area sank to 33 hectares and the range of varieties was adjusted. There were z. B. Grape varieties such as Müller-Thurgau and Scheurebe removed from the vineyards. The winery concentrated entirely on Riesling . There is also a Pinot Blanc vineyard and two red wine varieties with smaller plots. The individual layers are specifically and individually processed depending on the circumstances (soil, grape varieties, weather, age of the vines, potential).

In the cellar, investments were made in new technology and old traditions. New tanks with controllable cooling and traditional wooden barrels with a capacity of 1,200 liters (single barrel) were purchased. The aging in these barrels has a long tradition in the Rheingau, which has been revived in recent years due to its good suitability for particularly long-lived wines.

Vinification and expansion

The winery, which is organized in the VDP and DLG , strives to cultivate viniculture that is forward-looking and close to nature . The individual processing of the individual areas plays an important role, also during the harvest. The average yield is 60 to 80 hectoliters per hectare, with top wines 30 to 50 hectoliters per hectare. The selectively harvested grapes are gently pressed. This is followed by gently cooled sedimentation and cooled fermentation . The red wines are stored in barrique barrels for ten to twelve months , whereas the white wines have so far been stored 100% in stainless steel tanks - sometimes on the fine lees for a few months. But changes are also planned in this area. Since autumn 2008, some of the best dry Rieslings have been stored in wooden barrels that are traditional for the Rheingau. The premium and noble sweet wines have so far been closed with natural cork, the estate wines and, since 2008, also the single-vineyard wines in the cabinet area have screw caps .

Wines

The Prinz von Hessen winery offers a wide selection of typical wines and sparkling wines from the Rheingau region . The offer ranges from entry-level wine in liter bottles to estate wines and sparkling wines, single-vineyard and single-vineyard sparkling wines and premium sweet wines and the "first plants" tested by a strict independent commission from the Rheingau winegrowing association. 200,000 to 250,000 bottles are filled every year. 20% of this is shipped to the USA . Other export markets are Finland , Austria , Japan and England .
