The Wagner-Stempel winery in Siefersheim in Rheinhessen Switzerland is a winery in the German wine-growing region Rheinhessen .

history

Vines have been grown and wines have been cultivated in the company for eight generations. Like many businesses in the Rhine-Hesse region, it was originally a mixed operation, which the former cowshed still bears witness to today. In the last decades of the 20th century, the conversion and concentration on a specialized wine-growing company took place and in 1985 bottled wine marketing began . The winery has been a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP) since 2004 .

Grape variety mirror

Mainly white grape varieties are grown on around 15 hectares of vineyards. With a share of more than half of the total vineyard area, Riesling is the dominant grape variety , around a quarter of which are Burgundy varieties and also a significant proportion of Silvaner. The red varieties are Pinot Noir , Early Burgundy , St. Laurent and a parcel Merlot on Höllberg managed. The other varieties are Auxerrois , Chardonnay , Sauvignon Blanc and Scheurebe . Around 120,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.

Locations

Vineyards are cultivated in the locations Siefersheimer Heerkretz, Höllberg and Goldenes Horn as well as Wonsheimer Hölle. The top locations and the first locations designated by the VDP are Siefersheimer Heerkretz and Siefersheimer Höllberg. Only these top locations managed by the winery are shown on the labels of the noble sweet predicate wines and large plants. The designation Großer Gewächs, as an individual layer designation, should allow a comparison with the layer classification similar to Alsace or Burgundy Grand Crus .

The special feature of the Siefersheimer locations is the volcanic weathered rock in the subsoil, which was formerly also known as porphyry rock. The current geological name is rhyolite . In particular with the Riesling grape variety, with appropriate management, an unmistakable aroma and style of the wine, characterized by the character of the soil, is possible. With each new vintage, Wagner Stempel tries to work out the peculiarities of the soil structure in interaction with the other defining quality factors in order to ultimately produce unmistakable, independent wines.

Vinification

Wines from the best grapes of the year are produced under the designation "S" (selection wines / local wines) , which are matured in stainless steel tanks as well as in traditional barrels made of oak. The wines are not bottled before May of the wine year .

The winery has been a member of the VDP since 2004 and is part of the Message in a Bottle winegrowers' association . In recent years the estate has received the following honors and awards (no claim to completeness):

  • The magazine Capital (issue 26/2006) writes: With the Siefersheimer Höllberg site, Daniel Wagner achieved the top position among 170 presented large plants in 2006. The star listed the estate among the 100 best wineries in Germany. The wine magazine Vinum and the FAZ as well as the specialist press as a whole also praise the winery.

building

The old cross-vaulted stable with its double row of columns and cross -vaulted ceilings is a popular venue and a flagship of the Rhine-Hessian wine vaults . The inner courtyard, paved with basalt stones, is dominated by an old chestnut tree that provides invigorating shade in summer. The wine sale is also housed in a groined vault. A column with an approach to the vault also forms the unmistakable logo on wine labels and letterhead and thus ensures the visual identity .
