Welesniw ( Ukrainian Велеснів ; Russian Велеснев Welesnjew , Polish Weleśniów ) is a village in Ternopil Oblast in western Ukraine with about 680 inhabitants (2004).
geography
Welesniw is the administrative center of the district council of the same name in Monastyryska district , which also includes the village of Salissja ( Залісся ). The village is located on the banks of the Koropez , a tributary of the Dniester 9 km south of the Rajons capital Monastyryska and 92 km southwest of the oblast capital Ternopil .
history
The village was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1454. From 1772 to 1918 Welesniw belonged to the Austrian Galicia . After the end of the First World War , the place became part of the Polish Tarnopol Voivodeship , was occupied by the Soviet Union from September 1939 and then by Germany from the summer of 1941 to 1944 during World War II , where the place was incorporated into the Galicia district. After the end of the war the place was added to the Soviet Union, there the village came to the Ukrainian SSR and has been part of today's Ukraine since 1991.
Personalities
The Ukrainian folklorist , ethnologist, literary scholar, translator and journalist Volodymyr Hnatyuk was born in the village in 1871 .
