Volodymyr Hnatyuk
Volodymyr Mychailowytsch Hnatjuk ( Ukrainian Володимир Михайлович Гнатюк * April 27 jul. / 9. May 1871 greg. In Welesniw , eastern Galicia , Austria-Hungary , † 6. October 1926 in Lviv , Poland ) was a Ukrainian folklorist , ethnologist , literary scholar , Translator and journalist who worked mainly in western Ukraine.
Since 1899 he was a member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society ( Naukowe towarystwo im. Schewtschenka / Наукове товариство ім. Шевченка ), the oldest and at that time the only Ukrainian scientific society, and from 1902 also the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .
Life
Volodymyr Hnatjuk was born in Velesniw in what is now the Ternopil Oblast of Ukraine, the son of a community clerk. As a teenager he was already collecting folk objects. Between 1894 and 1898 he studied at the University of Lviv , where he headed the student organization Academic Hromada . His mentors there were Ivan Franko and Mychajlo Hruschewskyj , to whom he remained connected throughout his life.
Hnatjuk was one of the founders and editors of the "Literary and Scientific Bulletin" and, at the end of 1898, the founder, editor and managing director of the "Ukrainian-Russian Publishing Union" in Ukraine.
Hnatjuk died on October 6, 1926 at 6 p.m. in Lviv and was buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery there next to his son Stefan and near Ivan Franko.
