Wend von Wietersheim (born April 18, 1900 in Neuland in the Löwenberg district , † September 19, 1975 in Bad Honnef ) was a German officer , most recently lieutenant general and commander of the 11th Panzer Division and commanding general in the XXXXI. Army Corps in World War II .

Life

He is the son of the mayor and owner of the Neuland manor, Walter von Wietersheim (1863-1919). His older brother was the later NSDAP member of the state parliament and district administrator of the Löwenberg district, Mark von Wietersheim .

In the First World War Wietersheim was an ensign . In 1919 he was promoted to lieutenant and accepted into the Reichswehr , where he served in various cavalry regiments from 1924. In 1938 he switched to armored weapons, first to the staff of the 3rd Panzer Division , then to the 1st Panzer Division . Here he commanded the motorbike battalion ( Western campaign ), later the Rifle Regiment 113 ( war against the Soviet Union ). In 1943 he was appointed commander of the 11th Panzer Division. Apart from a short break, he stayed that way until shortly before the end of the war. His division fought in Russia until mid-1944, then on the Western Front.

In April 1945 he was briefly commanding general in the XXXXI. Army Corps .

On May 5, 1945 he surrendered to the Americans in Bavaria, but was not taken prisoner of war.
