Wendelin Beyschlag (born March 21, 1575 in Bretten ; † possibly after 1622 there ) was a German sculptor .

life and work

Wendelin Beyschlag was the son of the sculptor Martin Beyschlag from Kraichgau in Baden-Württemberg . After completing his training in his father's handicraft, Beyschlag saw his professional future in a large city like Cologne , where a large number of sacred buildings had been erected, but many of the wealthy families also had their houses decorated with works of art by sculptors and other artists. In addition, Cologne was one of the cities that, in terms of architecture, rose to become one of the European strongholds of the Renaissance in the 16th century .

Beyschlag lived in Cologne in what was then the parish of the parish church of St. Christoph , which stood directly next to the collegiate church of St. Gereon .

Beyschlags Sacrament House in St. Gereon

The sacrament house built by Beyschlag during his time in Cologne in 1608 is a three-storey structure (sacrament niche on the first floor) made of limestone that rests on a short pillar. The work of art in the Renaissance style reaches a height of 5.20 m and is 1.20 m wide and 0.64 m deep. The work of the Swabian sculptor, formerly donated by one of the canons of Gereonskirche, is now on the north wall of the basilica's long choir.

It is not known whether the sacrament house was Wendelin Beyschlag's only work, but it is unlikely due to his ability. He returned to his place of birth, where he was traceable again between 1616 and 1622.
