Wacław Michał Zaleski ( September 8, 1799 in Olesko , East Galicia - February 24, 1849 in Vienna ), pseudonym Wacław from Olesko ( Polish Wacław z Oleska ), was a Polish nobleman, poet, writer, folklore researcher, theater critic, political activist and the first Polish Austrian governor of Galicia (1848).

Life

Zaleski collected and published in Lviv Pieśni polskie i ruskie ludu galicyjskiego (Polish and Russian songs of the Galician nation; 1833), which contained about 1500 works, including 160 with piano accompaniment by Karol Lipiński . It was the largest collection of folk songs published in Poland before Oskar Kolberg . Zaleski was the author of patriotic songs, paraphrases, translations of Ukrainian Dumas and never published plays.

He helped found the Galician Earth Credit Society in Lemberg (Lviv). In November 1845 he was appointed real court advisor and head of the national department in the Vienna court office. He was also the Polish teacher of 18 year old Franz Joseph. On July 30, 1848, he was appointed governor of Galicia. In this position he called for the restoration of the Polish language in schools and offices, the establishment of the National School Council (including universities) and the development of a local government project with the National Sejm. He rejected all projects to divide Galicia according to the nationality criterion. In September 1848 he organized elections to the city council in Kraków , which removed the Austrian generals from power in that city. Shortly before his death, in January 1849, Ferdinand I awarded him the Leopold Order and the title of Real Privy Councilor. He was transferred to the Ministry of the Interior in Vienna, where he died. He was a poet who accidentally became governor, not a governor who wrote poetry in his spare time.

His sons were Filip Zaleski , member of the Austrian mansion, and Antoni (1842–1866; writer) and Józef Mieczysław (1838–1899; cavalryman, later commander of a division and field marshal).
