Major General Mutaftschijski as head of the "National Operational Headquarters" for the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in Bulgaria.

Wenzislav Metodiew Mutaftschijski ( Bulgarian Венцислав Методиев Мутафчийски , common transliteration Ventsislav Metodiev Mutafchiyski ; born August 20, 1964 in Dupnitsa ) is a major general of the Bulgarian Armed Forces , commander of the Bulgarian Armed Forces , commander of the Bulgarian Armed Forces since May 4, 2017. Rector of the Military Medical Academy in Sofia and, since February 24, 2020, head of the "National Crisis Team for Coronavirus Prevention and Combat" for the fight in Bulgaria against the COVID-19 pandemic .

Educational path

Mutaftschijski graduated from Sofia Medical University in 1990 with a degree in medicine .

In 1996 he specialized in general surgery. Between 1997 and 2002 he was an assistant professor at the Clinic for Vascular Surgery of the Military Medical Academy in Sofia . From 2000 to 2003 he was Senior Assistant Professor at the General Surgery Clinic. In 2005 there followed a specialization in military surgery and a doctoral degree at the "Chair for Gastroenterology , Liver and Pancreas Surgery and Transplantology " under the scientific direction of Professor Dr. med. Borimir Wassilew ( Bulgarian Боримир Василев ). After completing his doctorate in 2011, Mutaftschijski was appointed Associate Professor in 2012. The subject of his dissertation is “Explosive trauma - general characteristics, diagnosis and treatment algorithm”, the public defense took place in Sofia on July 1, 2011 at the Military Medical Academy. In 2015 Mutaftschijski was appointed professor of surgery.

His specialties are abdominal surgery , liver and pancreas surgery , laparoscopic surgery , emergency surgery, liver transplantation , and intraoperative ultrasound .

In addition to Bulgarian as his mother tongue , he also speaks English and Russian .

Military career

Mutaftschijski joined the Bulgarian Army in 1989 as a lieutenant . From 1991 to 1993 he was the head of the medical service in the Division "IV – er Kilometer" - General Staff .

In 2014 he became head of the surgery department and deputy head of the Military Medical Academy in Sofia.

Professor Dr. Wenzislaw Mutaftschijski took over the interim management of the Military Medical Academy in Sofia in 2017.

By Decree No. 27 of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radew , Colonel Mutaftschijski was appointed Head of the Military Medical Academy and Commander Command Medical Service of the Bulgarian Armed Forces and promoted to Brigadier General on February 7, 2018.

Brigadier General Mutaftschijski was promoted to major general on May 6, 2019 by Decree No. 96 of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radew ( Bulgarian Румен Радев ).

Military missions

Mutaftschijski took part in the following military missions:

  • Radusha refugee camp in North Macedonia in 2000,
  • Medical evacuation of victims of the terrorist attack in the city of Karbala in Iraq in 2003,
  • Medical evacuation of victims of the terrorist attack in the city of Karbala in Iraq from " Landstuhl Regional Medical Center " in Germany to the Military Medical Academy in Bulgaria in January 2004,
  • Medical evacuation of soldiers from the "Landstuhl Regional Medical Center" in Germany to the Military Medical Academy in Bulgaria in May 2004,
  • Surgeon in the Spanish military field hospital "Arena Base" in the city of Herat in Afghanistan , 2006–2007.

Teaching and research at other institutions

Mutaftschijski was appointed professor at the Privolzhsky Research Medical University in May 2015.

Head of the "National Crisis Team for Coronavirus Prevention and Control"

After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mutaftschijski was appointed head of the “National Crisis Team for Coronavirus Prevention and Control” on February 24, 2020 for the fight in Bulgaria against the COVID-19 pandemic. He held daily briefings presenting updated statistics and answering questions from reporters. Major General Mutaftschijski quickly gained popularity as a result and arguably became the public figure associated with the fight in Bulgaria against the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Badge of honor of the Bulgarian Medical Union in silver for high morals and professionalism in particularly difficult situations of national importance (2012),
  • Letter of thanks from the Ambassador of the State of Israel for the help and support given to Israeli citizens as victims of the terrorist attack in Burgas (2013),
  • Badge of honor in silver: from the Minister of Health (2016).
