The Werdinsel is located in the Höngg district of the city of Zurich below the Höngger weir between the Limmat river and an artificially created canal ("upper water canal / underwater canal ") which leads Limmatwasser to the Höngg museum power station. In addition to an official bathing facility, it has barbecue facilities and a football field.
The historical focus of the island is formed by two witnesses of the early industrialization : a powder mill from the 17th century, which was converted several times, and a former spinning mill . A second group of houses is made up of a turbine plant from the late 19th century and the pumping station from the late 20th century. Under parts of the Werdinsel there is a retention basin for rainwater built in 1986 , which holds 40,000 cubic meters of water. The Werdhölzli sewage treatment plant is on the opposite side of the river .
The Werdinsel Openair music festival takes place every year in August .
The name Expectant goes to Old High German werid or Middle High German value back, the "island river island" meant. This word died out as a generic word in the 16th century and has only survived as a name since then. Since it was no longer understood, it was later supplemented by the synonymous island , with which Werdinsel means " island island " in historical terms.
