Werigand (Friuli)

Werigand (* around 970; † around 1051) was Count of Friuli and Istria as well as Vogt of the Duke of Carinthia and Vogt of St. Peter in Salzburg .

Life

Werigand was probably the son of Azzo (Adalbert), who in 965 was the governor of Patriarch Rodoald of Aquileia in Istria. He administered important ecclesiastical loans to Aquileia.

In 1001 King Otto III. the count half of the Silikano Castle and the Gorizia court as well as the land between Isonzo and Wippach including the mountains. The recipient of the other half, Patriarch Johann , opposed the donation, but was rejected at the court day in Verona that same year; the document designates Werigand as Count of the County of Friuli .

At the court day on May 19, 1027 in Verona, which King Conrad II held to resolve the dispute between Patriarch Poppo of Aquileia and Duke Adalbero of Carinthia , Count Werigand appears under the name Wezzelin as the duke's bailiff and messenger of violence .

In a certificate of a Wildbann award to Patriarch Poppo in 1028, Werigand appears as Count Warientus in the Gau Friuli.

Around 1051, several donations to Countess Willibirgs , his widow, in favor of Geisenfeld in memory of her husband Werigand are recorded.

A Ludwig, who is found as Count of Friuli in 1056 and 1060, could have been Werigand's son or grandson.

Werigand was married to Willibirg, heir daughter of Ebersberg († after 1056), daughter of Margrave Ulrich ; their descendants were:
