Werner Baumann (diplomat)

Werner Baumann (* 1947 in Altdorf ) is a Swiss diplomat and former ambassador of the Swiss Confederation in Germany .

Life

After studying law at the University of Bern and the University of Zurich , from which he graduated with a licentiate in law, Baumann completed his legal internship from 1973 to 1975, qualifying as a lawyer and notary . While working in the legal department of Allgemeine Treuhand AG in Zurich, he received his doctorate in law in 1977 .

In 1979 and 1980 Baumann was attaché to the Swiss delegation to the OECD in Paris . He then moved to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) as a diplomatic assistant . In 1984 he went to the Swiss Consulate General in New York City as Consul for Legal and Financial Matters . From 1987 to 1991 he was first deputy head and then head of the international law section of the FDFA, where after his return from Prague he was deputy director from 1993 to 1998 and later deputy director of the international law department. In Prague Baumann was the first employee of the head of mission at the Swiss embassy.

Baumann was Switzerland's ambassador to the Philippines from 1998 to 2002 and ambassador to Germany from 2002 to 2006. In May 2006 he moved to Ottawa as Swiss Ambassador to Canada and the Bahamas .

Baumann retired at the end of May 2011.
