Athletic career

As a student, Werner Dost played for the company sports club (BSG) Stahl in the Karl-Marx-Städter district of Reichenhain . As a junior player for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt, he was appointed to the GDR junior national team in 1966, with which he played eight international matches until 1967. He was mainly used as a defender. Dost played his first games in the GDR league in the 1969/70 season, when he was used three times in the second half of the season. Then the FC Karl-Marx-Stadt rose from the GDR league. There Dost developed into a regular player. Of the 30 East German league games played in 1970/71, he played 22 games, with four goals as a defender. Also for the league season 1971/72 Dost was again planned as a defender in the starting line-up, but the new coach Gerhard Hofmann hesitated at first and only used him regularly from the sixth matchday on, also several times in midfield. In the last game of the first half of the season, Dost was injured so badly that he could only play three league games for the rest of the season. In the following three seasons he only made ten league appearances. In contrast, he was mainly used in the second team, with which he played until 1974/75 (relegation to the district league ) in the GDR league. After all the second teams of the league participants were banished to the district league in 1976, Werner Dost's competitive sporting career was over. Within seven seasons he reached 28 league appearances with two goals and 61 appearances in the GDR league with thirteen goals.
