Werner Freitag (born January 4, 1946 in Spaden near Bremerhaven ) is a German swimmer. He was President of the Hessian Swimming Association for 20 years.

biography

Family and education

Friday attended elementary school in the small community of Spaden near Bremerhaven and then the commercial school in Bremerhaven. From 1966 he studied at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and obtained his doctorate . Since 1978 he has been a lecturer at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in the sports science department. He lives in Rüsselsheim am Main .

Friday is married. His daughter Meike Freitag (* 1979) became a freestyle swimmer and took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta (silver and bronze medals) and at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney (bronze) and u. a. participated in two world championships.

The swimmer

From 1960, Freitag trained with Peter Volbehr at the ATS Bremerhaven . At the German Youth Championships in Lübeck in 1961, he won three titles: over 100 meters back in 1: 05.6 minutes, over 200 meters back in 2: 24.1 minutes and over 400 meters crawl in 4: 51.8 minutes. He set a number of DSV records early on and has held the German record over 100 meters butterfly since 1962 , most recently with 59.5 seconds.

As a butterfly swimmer , he was German champion over 200 meters in the 1963 and 1965 championships. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, he achieved tenth place over 200 meters in the semifinals with 2: 13.5 minutes and did not reach the final. At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico , he started over 100 meters butterfly and reached the semi-finals.

Trainer and association official

From 1967 to 1980 he was a trainer in Rüsselsheim am Main for the Hessian and German swimming federations and a member of the Rüsselsheimer SC and the TG Rüsselsheim . In 1975 he became head of discipline in the German University Sports Association and was a member of the executive committee of the German Swimming Trainers Association until 2018 . From 1993 to 1998 he was an instructor in the Hessian Swimming Association. From 1998 to 2018 he was President of the Hessian Swimming Association; He was followed in this position by Michael Scragg from Hanau. In the State Sports Association of Hesse , he is on the State Committee for Competitive Sports and on the management team of the Hesse Olympic Training Center. He is a member of the competitive sports commission of the DSV.
