Werner Froemel (* 1927 in Nysa ; † July 5, 2009 in Bayreuth ) was a German painter and sculptor .

life and work

Werner Froemel made the visual arts his life at the age of 50. Before that, the trained botanist was successful as a landscape architect and horticultural entrepreneur. As such, he designed numerous parks and squares in the region. In 1978 Froemel first appeared in public with a solo exhibition. From then on he was an integral part of Bayreuth's art life. The sculptures for the clinics in Bayreuth and Kulmbach were awarded prizes. The Friedrich Baur Foundation in Altenkunstadt purchased a sculpture. As an artist in residence, Froemel took part in scholarships at the Künstlerhaus Salzburg and at the Villa Romana in Florence. He was involved in the Bayreuth Free Group, ordered numerous exhibitions and experimented with radio and book projects. In 2008 a collection of texts “Elbnacht” was published.

Froemel's world of images is figuratively realistic and includes a broad thematic spectrum, from portraits and landscapes to monumental quotations from Christian iconography. In addition to oil and acrylic paintings, Froemel designed an extensive graphic oeuvre. An abundance of pencil drawings and studies and numerous prints often deal with cyclical motif variations. Werner Froemel's graphic estate was acquired by the Upper Franconian Foundation in 2011 . It is processed and stored in the Bayreuth Art Museum.
