Werner Gauss

Werner Gauss (born August 9, 1911 in Stettin ; † 1990 in Heilbronn ) was a German journalist, press illustrator, editor, publisher, publicist, painter and author who has published a large number of popular science books and articles on Pomerania , Stettin and Heilbronn.

Life

Werner Gauss was born in Stettin in 1911 as the son of the Heilbronn architect Gustav Wilhelm Gauss (* July 15, 1880 in Heilbronn; † November 24, 1955 in Stralsund), and came to Heilbronn at the age of 6. From 1918 to 1921 he attended the Karls-Gymnasium . From 1921 he worked as an editor and press illustrator for the Pommerschen Zeitung in Stettin, later as an editor in Naugard and Stuttgart , and finally from 1935 to 1945 as an editor at the Hohenloher Rundschau in Öhringen .

In July 1945 Gauss, who was a member of the NSDAP and SA- Obersturmführer, came to an internment camp in Kornwestheim , from there in December 1945 to the Heilbronn camp in the Böckingen district , and in February 1946 back to Kornwestheim. During his time in the Heilbronn camp, he recorded his impressions of the camp and the people in drawings and created portraits of prisoners and guards. In 1948 he was released. The tribunal classified Gauss as less polluted .

In the post-war period he was a long-time cultural advisor for the Pomeranian Landsmannschaft. He painted many pictures and wrote for the Heilbronner Abendpost (1949), a side edition of the Fränkische Nachrichten that appeared only a few months . In 1950 he founded his own publishing house, Gauss-Verlag. Several works about Pomerania and two city guides about Heilbronn were published there. He was a co-founder of the Heilbronner Kunstverein and the Heilbronner Künstlerbund . In 1954 he worked at the Heilbronn city traffic office. From 1957 to 1972 Gauss designed the official gazette for the city and district of Heilbronn. In 1984 Gauss was awarded the plaque of merit by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge .

His youngest brother was the officer Jürgen Gauss (born March 18, 1918 in Stettin, † September 4, 1996 in Bad Mergentheim). He also had another brother and three children, only two of whom lived to be adults.
