Werner Heilemann

Werner Heilemann (born May 18, 1925 in Hartha ) is a former high-ranking trade unionist in the GDR and was temporarily a member of the Presidium of the People's Chamber of the GDR .

Life

Werner Heilemann was born as the son of a communist working class family. After attending primary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a building fitter from 1939 to 1942. After completing his apprenticeship, Heilemann studied at the technical college for civil engineering in Munich until 1943, before he was drafted into military service at the age of 18 and came to the Eastern Front . In the spring of 1945 Heilemann deserted by jumping from a hospital train that was crossing Saxony.

After the end of the war, Heilemann joined the KPD and was involved in the anti- fascist youth. He found a job with the city council in his hometown and was appointed youth councilor of Hartha in the fall. Furthermore, Heilemann was one of the founding members of the People's Solidarity . He also became a member of the FDGB and between 1946 and 1948 worked full-time as the youth secretary of the Saxon FDGB regional association in Dresden. In 1948 Heilemann was sent to the German People's Council as a representative of the FDGB . At the same time he moved to East Berlin and initially worked as youth secretary until 1950 and from 1950 to 1952 as head of the youth department in the FDGB federal board. Between 1949 and 1955 Heilemann represented the FDGB also in the FDJ , as a member of the central council of the FDJ. He also represented the FDGB as a member of the People's Chamber from 1949 to 1954.

After training at the Karl Marx party college in 1953, Heilemann became an employee of the Central Committee of the SED , where he was head of the trade unions and social policy sector. In 1962 he was delegated again to Dresden, where he held the office of chairman of the FDGB district board in Dresden until 1967. At the same time he became a member of the SED district leadership in Dresden, the Dresden district assembly and the FDGB federal executive committee. In 1967 the trade union delegated him to study at the trade union college in Bernau , from which he graduated in 1968 with the title of a social scientist.

After completing his studies, Heilemann moved back to Berlin and was a member of the Presidium and Secretary for Western Work of the FDGB Federal Board until 1989. In 1981 he was sent again as a member of the People's Chamber by the FDGB and until November 1989 represented the union in the Presidium of the People's Chamber. He also held the post of Vice-Chairman of the Committee on National Defense. In November 1989 Heilemann was during the turn , released from all activities that he carried out as part of its membership in the national executive of the FDGB. Until 1990, however, he headed the FDGB's “Internal Trade Union Democracy” working group. After 1990 Heilemann was mainly involved in the “ people's solidarity ” in Berlin.
