Werner Hoppe (wrestler)

Werner Hoppe (born July 27, 1934 in Saarbrücken ; † December 31, 2010 ) was one of the best German wrestlers in the period before and after 1960 and belonged to KSV Köllerbach.

He wrestled almost exclusively in the Greco-Roman style. In 1958, 1960 and 1963 he was welterweight and 1965 and 1968 middleweight German champion . His toughest competitors for the championship title of this time and for qualifications for the Olympic Games in 1956, 1960 and 1964 were Heribert Hofmann , Lichtenfels, Peter Nettekoven , Duisdorf, Georg Utz , Kornwestheim and Horst Hess , Dortmund.

He took part in the 1955 World Championships, at that time still for Saarland , which was an independent member of the International Wrestling Federation (FILA) , in 1958 and 1963, but could not place in the front field. He also played two European championship tournaments, 1966 in Essen and 1968 in Västerås , where he finished 7th in Essen. He achieved remarkable victories over Ansbol, Denmark, Bruno Finzel , Greiz / GDR, Överby, Norway, Winkler and Pötsch, both Austria.

With his team, KSV Köllerbach , he won the title of German team champion in 1966, 1968 and 1972.
