Live and act

After graduating from high school, Kasig studied geology at the Bergakademie Freiberg , the University of Bonn and the RWTH Aachen University and completed his studies in 1962 with the examination to become a qualified geologist. He was then taken on as an assistant at RWTH Aachen University, where he received his doctorate in 1967 and completed his habilitation in 1980 .

This was followed by a two-year term as a professor of geology at the University of Essen . In 1982 he returned to RWTH Aachen University, where he headed the teaching and research area “General, Regional and Historical Geology” at the Geological Institute until his retirement in 2001.

Kasig's research focus was on the geology of the slate mountains on the left bank of the Rhine , the Eifel and the Aachen area, as well as research into carbonate rocks and environmental geology . He was mainly involved in geological public relations and was instrumental in initiating the establishment of geopaths, visitor mines and geological museums.

In addition, Kasig was one of the group of people who played a decisive role in the establishment of the Professional Association of German Geoscientists (BDG) based in Bonn in 1984 , of which he was in charge until 1987. During this time he set up an office with full-time management and was involved in the drafting of BDG communications. For his services to the BDG, he was made an honorary member in 1999.

In his place of residence in the Aachen district of Laurensberg , Kasig was one of the founding members of the "Laurensberger Heimatfreunde", in whose homeland sheets he published several articles with regional references.
