Werner Querfeld

Werner Querfeld (born January 18, 1929 in Greiz , Thuringia ; † October 11, 2017 ) was a German historian and archivist . From 1960 to 1994 he headed the Thuringian State Archives in Greiz, which was initially a branch of the Weimar State Archives .

Life

After attending elementary school, he went to high school in Greiz from 1939. After the Second World War, he studied history, German and philosophy at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena , where in 1951 he passed the state examination and the following year in which also dating Greiz Friedrich Schneider to Dr. phil. PhD. Then he went back to his hometown, where he found a job at the local museum there and in 1954 switched to the State Collection of Books and Engravings . In 1957 he went to the Institute for Archival Studies in Potsdam for further training in order to obtain a degree as a qualified archivist.

In 1960 he took over the management of the Greiz archive branch, which he held until he reached retirement age in 1994. His successor was on April 1, 1994 Hagen Rüster , who later became director of the Thuringian State Archive.

Professionally and in his free time, Werner Querfeld dealt intensively with the history of the Reussian region as well as the local history of Greiz and the surrounding area and presented over 700 different publications on these topics.
