biography

After graduating from high school , Werner Zimmer studied theology , history and sports at the Saarland University . Even during his studies there, he earned his financial basis as a freelancer in the sports department of Saarland Broadcasting Corporation (SR) . Zimmer was an active track and field athlete himself in his younger years and was one of the top Saarland leaders at the time. For many years he was the Saarland record holder over 800 meters and ran in the 4 x 100 meter relay of his club SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken together with the Olympic champion Armin Hary . In 1963 he reported for the first time for the Saarländischer Rundfunk as a radio reporter on the Tour de France , which did not let him go until the end of his career. At first he followed the tour as a reporter and presenter, from 1998 he took over the management of the ARD and ZDF team, which he still held in 2008, for the "Großer Runde". Before that, he worked as a coordinator for ARD sports for five years.

Since 1964, Zimmer has been involved in various functions at all Summer and Winter Olympic Games, World and European Championships and numerous other major sporting events. Another focus of his journalistic activity was the moderation of the ARD sports show , which he was responsible for from 1966 to 1993; He was known to the public interested in sports as "Mr. Sports show ". His favorite sporting fields were cycling, athletics, rowing and canoeing. From the beginning of the 1970s to 1976 he was also the presenter of the quiz program Eins plus Eins gegen Zwei , which dealt with issues of road safety.

In 1970 Werner Zimmer became head of the sports department for radio and television at Saarländischer Rundfunk, but his commitment here went far beyond the field of sports. In 1991 he was appointed head of the “Sport and Society” department, after which he took over the management of the “Current TV” department and in 1991 became Deputy TV Director. In 1993 he was appointed program director for television. In addition, Zimmer was appointed deputy director of the Saarland broadcaster in 1998 .

After almost 40 years of service with the SR, Werner Zimmer retired in 2001.

voluntary work

Zimmer headed the “Saar Press Club”, an association of Saarland journalists, and promoted his country as the official “Saarland Ambassador” of the state government. In 2001 he was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit, the highest award in Saarland.

In a special way, Zimmer showed sustainable social commitment. In the mid-1990s e.g. B. together with several prominent athletes and media representatives from Germany, he founded a group of friends called “Die Schneeforscher”, who decided to do sports together for charitable purposes. The name arose from a shared love for skiing. Jupp Derwall (1927–2007), Franz Beckenbauer , Uwe Seeler and Erich Ribbeck belong to the circle . Over the years several hundred thousand euros have been made available for charitable purposes through the actions of the “snow researchers”. Werner Zimmer was also the chairman of the award committee for the Saarland sports badge .
