Werner Zotz

Werner Zotz (* 1947 in Indaial , Santa Catarina , Brazil ) is a German-Brazilian writer who lives and works in Florianópolis .

Life

Werner Zotz, who is descended from the emigrants of the Austro-German family Zotz , spent his childhood in Rio Negrinho in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. He then lived in Paraná , Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo and finally in Parque Indígena do Xingu , a protected area for indigenous peoples in Mato Grosso , in which 16 tribes of the Xingu Indians are settled. Here he dealt intensively with the way of life and culture of these Indians, which flowed into his work in a variety of ways. In 1987 he settled in Florianópolis. Werner Zotz traveled to Brazil as an adventurer, even in its inaccessible regions, to collect material for his literature.

As an author, Werner Zotz has published more than 20 books for young people and adventure novels that deal with the landscape and the people of Brazil and the fate of the indigenous peoples. He has received numerous awards, including the UNESCO Prize for the best youth book of 1984 for Rio Liberdade at the International Youth Book Fair in Bologna in 1985. In 1987 his book Apenas um curumim was recognized by UNESCO as the best youth book from Latin America. The title can be translated as just one Indian child. It is "a text for young people about Indian life with a believable plot and an authentic description of the characters."

As a popular translator, Zotz has translated numerous classics of youth literature into Portuguese, including Moby Dick by Herman Melville , Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe and King Solomon's Treasury by Henry Rider Haggard . Many of these Portuguese versions of classics of youth literature are literary adaptations of the originals. In Moby Dick, for example, the captain Ahab is portrayed as "psychologically more complex" compared to Melville's original in Zotz.

The works and translations of Werner Zotz are popular school reading in Brazil . The author also deals with educational issues to promote reading behavior in children and adolescents.

In 2007 Werner Zotz was honored for his life's work by the Academia Catarinense de Letras .

As a renowned photographer dedicated to the landscapes, nature and people of Brazil, Werner Zotz has published several photo books. His photos appear in numerous Brazilian magazines and are used by the state's foreign traffic advertising. Werner Zotz founded the publishing house Editora Letras Brasileiras, which, in addition to local authors, represents Ingmar Bergman in Brazil.

Zotz, who is committed to nature conservation and the rights of the indigenous peoples of Brazil, was awarded the Herbert de Sousa Prize in October 2008 .

In addition, Werner Zotz is concerned about sustainable tourism in Brazil, as well as general questions about the development of the tourism industry . He has been publishing the yearbook turismo & cia on this topic since 2006 .
