Werner von Beesten (born April 19, 1832 in Osnabrück , † March 30, 1905 in Lingen ) was a German lawyer and politician.

Life

Werner Carl Gerhard Anton von Beesten was born on April 19, 1832 in Osnabrück as the son of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander von Beesten (1788-1859) and his wife Caroline von Beesten, née. Brandenburg (1803–1864), born. He belonged to the Rheiner line of a Westphalian aristocratic family , which originally came from the eponymous place Beesten . He studied at the universities of Bonn , Heidelberg and Goettingen jurisprudence . After graduating, he worked as an official assessor and arbitrator in Berum , Sögel and Meppen .

Beesten was mayor of the city ​​of Lingen from 1863 to 1893 , a member of the district assembly of the Lingen district , a member of the provincial state parliament of the Prussian province of Hanover and, as a member of the Lingen / Bentheim constituency, from 1866 to 1870 a member of the Prussian House of Representatives in Berlin .

In addition, he was the initiator and chairman of the Royal Society for the Left Ems Canal and the Royal Canal Commission of Münster . He was instrumental in the implementation of the plans for the completion of the Ems-Vechte Canal in 1879 and the Dortmund-Ems Canal in 1899. He was particularly interested in the development of the Emsland, the bog colonization and the expansion of the Left Ems canal network . In addition, he obtained an amendment to the mining law at that time and in 1877 founded an agricultural association for the city of Lingen and its surrounding area.

Werner von Beesten was a Catholic denomination and since 1869 with Johanna von Beesten, née. Hengehold (1848–1935), married. The marriage had four children, including the lawyer Heinrich von Beesten (1871–) and the doctor Carl von Beesten (1872–1964). He died on March 30, 1905 at the age of 72 in Lingen and was buried in the old cemetery there. The grave is no longer preserved today.

The Werner-von-Beesten Street in Lingen was named after him. This street is located near his former estate near Darme bei Lingen, which is called Haus Heidhof .
