The Wernerbad in the Berlin district of Kaulsdorf was opened in 1905 as the Wernersee outdoor pool and was open until 2002. The pool, a hybrid of a natural lake and a built outdoor pool, still exists, and there are no signs of reopening.

history

The Katzenstertpfuhl was a dead ice hole , a small natural body of water that formed in the last ice age . For 50 years, earth was removed from the pool for a brick factory , so that the lake became steadily deeper. There the Kaulsdorf farmer Wilhelm Werner (1877-1915) opened the excursion restaurant Badeschlösschen in 1901 and the Wernerbad bathing establishment in 1905 . Since then, the Katzenstertpfuhl has been called Wernersee . On August 12, 1905, the Kaulsdorf swimming club Wetterfest was founded; the date is considered the official opening of the bath. In summer there were swimming lessons for the Kaulsdorf children, in winter the lake was transformed into a natural ice rink . Four years later there were also changing rooms, a large club hall and a large garden next to the bathing palace. In 1945 the bathing business was stopped.

In 1951 the East Berlin magistrate took over the site. In the years 1957–1959, the Wernersee outdoor pool was made usable again as part of the NAW and opened on August 15, 1959. It had eight 50-meter lanes and sections for swimmers and non-swimmers. On the outdoor area there were sports fields, a children's playground and the small restaurant now run by consumption . There was also a group of stone penguins and a sculpture of a hippopotamus, which soon became the mascot of the swimming pool. Both works of art were created by the sculptor Erwin Kobbert in the 1950s, the hippopotamus still stands in a reed belt on the bank. From 1990 the lake became the property of the Berlin Senate , which presumably transferred it to the Marzahn district ; from 1996 the Berliner Bäderbetriebe operated the facility.

In 2002 the Wernerbad was closed because the structural, technical and hygienic equipment no longer met the standards. Nature was able to expand again unhindered, the buildings were victims of vandalism . For years, the district administration tried to reactivate the pool, also with the help of the citizens 'association' Freunde des Wernerbad e. V. '. There was no interested party for the implementation.

In 2013, the Berlin House of Representatives decided to rededicate the site, previously a sports area, and to draw up a development plan. A complex for dementia patients with a restaurant and medical facilities was to be built on the site, with the east bank of the Wernersee remaining open to the public. The BIM announced in July 2018 there was no surcharge capable offers from investors. As a result, a group of investors announced that they would take legal action against this decision. The further fate of the site is unclear.
