Westermient is a hamlet in the municipality of Texel in the Dutch province of North Holland .

Westermient is located west of Den Burg in the west of the island of Texel . Geographically, there were originally two large lakes with swampy heathland around them. Sand dunes separated the area from the North Sea. After all, the land was higher than the polders . So it could be used. That part of the landscape that was used by the neighboring village of De Koog was given the name Koogermient , the remaining part has been called Westermient since then .

history

In the 17th century became part of Westermient on two lines - Bleaching awarded production units of. With the advent of new textile fashions in the 18th century, De Oude Bleekerij initially lost its economic viability in 1731 and was abandoned. The other building, De Nieuw Bleekerij , remained in operation until 1775. With the closure of the operations, the general standard of living on site plummeted.

In 1918, the husband of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands , Prince Prince Hendrik , had a large house built in Westermient. The area was poor in people and therefore ideal for yacht trips and celebrations. 'T Mienthuis is currently used as a guest house for part of the year.

The other prominent resident of Westermient was the Dutch sculptor and writer Jan Wolkers, who died in 2007 . He's even published a slim book on the area.

Much of the area is currently bushland and dunes. The National Park Duinen van Texel passes here. On the edge there is pasture land and a few houses.
