Western Rocks in the southwest of the Isles of Scilly (bottom left on the map) |
The Western Rocks are an uninhabited archipelago in the west of the Isles of Scilly in Cornwall . The more than 15 rock islands lie southwest of St. Marys and north of Bishop Rock . The islands formed in the Carboniferous are part of the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and have been protected by the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) since 1971 due to the rare seabird colonies native to them. Due to the many shoals in the area of the Western Rocks, there were repeated ship accidents. In particular, the sinking of an English squadron under the command of Cloudesley Shovell in 1707, in which 1,450 sailors died, is noteworthy.
The Western Rocks include, in addition to the largest island Rosevear , Great Crebwethan Codnors Rocks , Crebwethan , Jolly Rock , Jacky's Rock , Silver Carn , Gorregan and Melledgan .
