Elisabeth Joanna Westonia (Johann Georg Balzer 1772)

Elisabeth Johanna von Weston (also Westonia ) (born November 2, 1582 in London , † November 23, 1612 in Prague ) was an English-Bohemian naturalist and poet of late humanism .

Life

Elisabeth Johanna von Weston comes from an old noble English family. After her father's early death, her mother married the alchemist Edward Kelley . He entered the service of Rudolf II and bought an estate in Brüx . There Elisabeth received lessons in Latin from Joh. Hammon . After the stepfather's death in 1597, the widow and her daughter moved to Prague to take care of the inheritance. The death of her brother Johann Franz Weston (* 1580; † November 4, 1600), who had studied at the University of Ingolstadt , prompted her to write poetry. She found friends and supporters in Georg Barthold Pontanus von Breitenberg, Georg Carolides , Wilhelm von Rosenberg , Julius Caesar Scaliger , Justus Lipsius , Jan van der Does and Paul Melissus . In 1601 she received a "poetic laurel wreath" from Melissius, Scaliger and Lipsius. In 1603 she married Johann Leo. She had seven children. She died while giving birth on November 23, 1612 in Prague. She was buried in the cemetery of St. Thomas Church . She wrote epigrams , odes , elegies , fables and distiches .

In 1772 the engraver Johann Georg Balzer made a portrait of her.
