Church in Weywertz (2012)

Weywertz is a village in Belgium and part of the municipality of Bütgenbach in the German-speaking Community . Weywertz is about 2 kilometers west of Bütgenbach; with 1743 inhabitants (2014) it is the largest part of the municipality. The town hall of the municipality of Bütgenbach is located in Oberweywertz, in the south of the village. The landmark of the village is the more than three hundred year old "Old Linden tree" in the center, which has been a protected natural monument since 1984.

The Warche flows on the northern edge of the village and drains the scenic surroundings around Lake Bütgenbach .

For about a century, the now closed Weywertz station was a railway junction, first in the German Empire and then in Belgium: this is where the Vennquerbahn from Jünkerath met the Vennbahn from Aachen to Ulflingen in Luxembourg . After the failure of a tourist railway project in the 1990s and the lack of state funds to rehabilitate the worn tracks, both lines were closed and dismantled in 2007. Today there are tourist bike paths ( RAVeL : Réseau Autonome de Voies Lentes ) on the routes, namely routes 48 ( Aachen – St.Vith ) and 45a (Weywertz– Losheim ).
