Whangaruru Harbor is a natural harbor in the Northland region ofthe North Island of New Zealand .

The Whangaruru Harbor is located approximately 40 km north of Whangarei on the east coast of Northland Peninsula . The natural harbor has a length of around 8.2 km and measures around 2.3 km at its widest point. The natural harbor merges seamlessly into Whangaruru Bay in the south via the approximately 1280 m wide port entrance and flows southeast into the Pacific Ocean . The partly rugged coastline of the natural harbor has a few bays with sandy beaches in the southern part and numerous inlets, some of which are silted up, in the northern part. The entire coastline has a length of around 32 km.
You can reach the Whangaruru Harbor on Russell Road, which at Whakapara from New Zealand State Highway 1 branches off toward the northeast.
history
The area around the natural harbor was and is the settlement area of the Māori tribe of the Ngāti Wai . 1820 the missionaries came Samuel Marsden and John Butler by Whangaruru that in the upper range is the natural harbor and had initial contacts with the Māori - Chief Te Morenga . Later followed the missionary Charles Baker , who converted the first Māori to the Christian faith in July 1842 .
At the end of the 19th century, around 2000 Māori lived on both sides of the port area and only a few Europeans settled on the coasts by the end of the 1870s.
From an archaeological point of view, the area around Whangaruru Harbor is interesting, as 63 historical locations have been identified around the natural harbor.
