Whangaruru settlement |
Whangaruru is a small settlement in the Whangarei District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Whangaruru means something like “protected harbor” in the Māori language .
geography
The settlement is located around 24 km east of Kawakawa and around 43 km north of Whangarei on Whangaruru Harbor , a natural harbor with access to the Pacific Ocean .
history
The area was named after the Māori tradition of Puhi , the chief of the Waka Mataatua , after he found shelter from bad weather here. The Māori of the area belong to the Iwi of the Ngāti Wai .
Education
With the Whangeruru School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2017, 43 students attended the school. The school was established in 2005 to replace the Punaruku , Ngaiotonga Valley and Helena Bay schools . It is located on the site of the old school in Punaruku .
