The Whopper ( English for giant thing or murder thing ) is a burger variant of the fast food chain Burger King . It was invented by James McLamore and David Edgerton in 1957 and sold at that time in the US for 37 cents (roughly equivalent to a value of $ 3.37 in 2020).

Ingredients and preparation

Its ingredients are a 113.4 gram ( quarter pound ) slice of ground beef , buns with sesame seeds , tomatoes , lettuce , mayonnaise , ketchup , pickles, and onions . As is usual with fast food chains, the ingredients are standardized. For example, the beef mince must have a fat content of exactly 20% and be prepared in 40 seconds.

The minced meat slice is driven through an oven on a grid, grilled over an open flame and at the end falls into a collecting tray. According to the regulations, it should always be freshly prepared after ordering.

Variations

There are numerous options when ordering the Whopper, for example an additional slice of minced meat can be added, or the Whopper is ordered without pickles. Other Whopper are the Double Whopper with two and the Triple Whopper with three slices of minced beef, the Whopper Cheese with an additional slice of cheese, the Original Whopper Jr. and the Chicken Whopper with chicken. The Original Whopper Jr. consists of the same ingredients as the Original Whopper , but the size of the hamburger and the sesame bun are different . Until 1993, the original Whopper Jr. was sold exclusively without onions.

There are also promotions for which Whopper variations are offered, such as the Angry Whopper during "Angry Weeks". This also contained fried onions and jalapeños . In April 2016, a red variant of the Whopper , the Angriest Whopper , appeared in Germany , which also contains jalapeños and a hot sauce. In addition, the roll of the special burger was baked with chilli, which gives the Angriest Whopper its red color. In addition, many different individual variants are possible as required.

Rebel Whopper

At the end of 2019, Burger King added a meat-free Whopper variant, the so-called Rebel Whopper, to its range under the slogan “100% Whopper, 0% Beef”. The patty, which consists mainly of soy, is sourced from the Dutch company The Vegetarian Butcher . The other main ingredients of the patty are wheat, vegetable oil, herbs and onion. Burger King advertises this variant of the Whopper as meat-free, but not as vegetarian. The meatless patty for the Rebel Whopper is fried together with the conventional beef patties on the same grill. This can lead to cross-contamination with beef fat, which is why the Rebel Whooper is strictly speaking neither completely vegetarian nor vegan . Even if it is a meat-free alternative, Burger King Switzerland even explicitly mentions “Not suitable for vegetarians or vegans” on the Rebel Whopper product page. The US counterpart for the Rebel Whopper is the so-called Impossible Whopper , which became so successful in the United States that it will become an integral part of the standard range of all Burger King branches at the end of 2019. The Impossible Whopper's meat-free patty is sourced from the American start-up Impossible Foods .
