The ram lady's slipper ( Cypripedium arietinum ), also called the horned lady's slipper, is a species of the genus Cypripedium in the orchid family (Orchidaceae).

features

The Aries lady's slipper is a perennial plant with a rhizome that reaches heights of 10 to 35 centimeters. The three to four leaves sit above the center of the stem and measure 5 to 10 × 1 to 3 centimeters. The inflorescence is single-flowered. The bracts are 2 to 5 inches long and longer than the flowers . The tepals are narrowly linear and drawn red-brown on a greenish background. The lateral outer tepals are - unlike the majority of the Cypripedium species - not fused together. The lateral inner tepals are narrowly lanceolate and somewhat twisted. The lip is obliquely conical, 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in length and is white to pink in color, with dark purple veins. It ends in a point pointing downwards. The staminodium is rounded.

Flowering time is from May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

The ram lady's slipper occurs in temperate eastern and central North America in peat moss bogs, larch and arborvitae swamps, moist coniferous forests and wooded rocky slopes up to altitudes of 1000 meters. The range includes central and eastern Canada and the northeast and north-central United States.

use

The ram lady's slipper is rarely used as an ornamental plant in swamp beds and pots.
