The Widmanhaus at market no. 5 in Schwäbisch Hall has been registered in the state directory of architectural monuments in Württemberg since October 8, 1925 . It forms a whole with the Stellwaghaus Am Markt 4.

history

The building probably has its origins in an older manor house that has existed since early Salian times . From 1236 to 1524 the stone house was part of the former Franciscan monastery , then a Latin school. Since 1561 the house belonged to Dr. Georg Rudolf Widman , Syndicus , and his wife Barbara, b. Sword. An elaborate portal in the Renaissance style , which shows the coat of arms of the Widman-Schwertlin family in the tympanum , also dates from this period . The building survived the city fire of 1728 unscathed. Since 1905 the house has belonged to the consumer association . In the Third Reich the house belonged to the SS-Sturmbann. The city archive has been located in the house since 1969.

Architecture and equipment

There are old stucco ceilings and oven niches on the upper floors . Also worth mentioning are a staircase and stucco work in several rooms from the time of the town hall. In the hall on the first floor there is a shepherdess as ceiling decoration and the four seasons as putti in the corners . There is a hunting frieze in the hollow . The coats of arms of the Wibel and Seiferheld families can be seen on one wall, carried by a cupid . In the bedroom, Cupid is depicted on a pigeon carriage on the ceiling.
