Wieland Beust

Wieland Beust (born March 25, 1968 in Braunschweig , † August 13, 1999 in Uelzen ) was a German martial artist, u. a. Vice European champion in karate, third in the World Cup in kickboxing and German champion in professional boxing.

Martial arts career

Wieland Beust began his martial arts career with karate , where he became Lower Saxony's national junior champion in 1988 (class: Kumite over 75 kg). Also in 1988 he took part with the national team of juniors at the European karate championship in Sopron , Hungary . The team won against the Scottish and Czech teams, but were eliminated against Spain and did not achieve a title. At the European Karate Championships in 1989, however, he won the silver medal in the junior singles over 80 kg. On April 13, 1989 he was a guest at the ZDF recording studio in Munich and showed partner combination exercises in karate as well as a demonstration fight for the youth program “Pfiff”.

Later active as a kickboxer , he took part in the 9th WAKO Kickboxing World Championship in Budapest in 1993 and won the bronze medal in full contact up to 81 kg. In 1994 he became a professional boxer and won seven out of nine fights. On November 1, 1996, he won the title of German light heavyweight champion with a points win over Fritz Plösser.

Criminal offenses

In December 1997 he was sentenced by the Hildesheim Regional Court to eight years and six months in prison for manslaughter and illicit gun possession. Beust, who is said to have been active in the red light district of Braunschweig, shot the friend of a prostitute because he was said to have raped a woman. In September 1998 he was transferred to the Uelzen JVA, where he was employed in the kitchen. In the course of his imprisonment there, he injured a fellow inmate during an argument, who then filed a complaint of assault. On August 13, 1999, Beust pounced on the deputy prison director Eckhardt Bunte and killed him with a knife. While trying to overpower Beust, the chef, Kurt Jendrischek, was killed and two judicial officers were critically injured. Then Beust rammed the knife into his own chest and died.
