Wierum is a village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the Dutch province of Friesland . It is located north of Dokkum and has 340 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
Wierum is right by the sea and the dike runs with a bay right around the village. Wierum is also the starting point for mudflat hikes to Engelsmanplaat .
history
Wierum was built on a terp where houses and later the village church were built. At first the village church was in the center of the village. However, after a few major floods in the Middle Ages and in the centuries that followed, large parts of the church were destroyed. Therefore the church was moved to the dike.
Fishing played an important role in Wierum until most of the fishing boats were destroyed in a severe storm in 1893. Only a few fishing boats were not destroyed because the storm threw them onto Ameland beach . That was a great misfortune for Wierum, as the majority of the population were fishermen and lived from fishing.
To commemorate the earlier fisherman's life, the construction of a two-masted two-master, the Wierummer Aek, was started in 2004. Before the destruction of the fishing fleet, this two-master was the usual fishing boat in Wierum.
Why in literature
A well-known quote about Wierum alludes to the location of the dike around the village:
- Dêr 't de dyk it lân omklammet, lyk in memme earm hjar bern.
- (Where the dike grips the land like a mother's arm her child.)
