geography

Wiesenberg extends along the eastern flank of the Stanserhorn between 1'000 and 1'500 m including the Alps . The high terrace is cut through by streams.

About the name

The name Wiesenberg (in Nidwaldner dialect as Wisibärg pronounced) remains a mystery. Today's spelling is based on a folk etymological interpretation. A connection with nhd. Wiese seems unlikely, since the “Wiesen” name cannot be explained as an erratic block in the middle of the “Matten” area. The oldest documents before 1330 all begin with «Wiso-», which is later replaced by «Wisa-».

population

Around 90 people make up the permanent resident population. The majority of them work in agriculture. The proportion of those who work in the valley is increasing. Alpine dairy farming, the associated cheese production and tourism determine economic life.

traffic

For tourists and visitors, Wiesenberg can be reached via the Dallenwil – Wiesenberg cable car and the Dallenwil – Wirzweli cable car from Wirzweli . Furthermore, the Wiesenbergstrasse connects Wiesenberg with Dallenwil and across the Ächerli with Kerns in the canton of Obwalden as a narrow, single-lane road, which is only accessible to the public outside the winter months .

Tourism / leisure

Wiesenberg is part of the Wiesenberg / Wirzweli tourist area. From spring to autumn Wiesenberg is the starting point for hikes to the Stanserhorn, Wirzweli, Gummen and over the Ächerli to Obwalden.
