Life

Bucher studied from 1960 at the State University of Tashkent and from 1964 at the Lomonossow University , where he made his diploma in mathematics in 1966. In 1970 he received his doctorate under Sergei Novikow (and Dmitry Fuchs ) and in 1984 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate). From 1969 he was at the All Union Research Institute for Physical-Technical and Radiotechnical Measurements (VNIIFTRI) in Mendelejewo , where he headed the department for mathematical modeling from 1979. He has been a professor at Lomonossow University (Chair of Geometry and Topology) since 1993 and at the Steklow Institute for Mathematics (Topology Department) since 1996 . He was visiting professor at the University of Maryland (several times in the 1990s), Tel Aviv University , the University of Edinburgh and Manchester , among others .

Since 1995 he has been editor of the Russian Mathematical Surveys (Uspechi Mat.Nauka) and he is co-editor of Functional Analysis and Applications. In 1970 he received the Moscow Mathematical Society Prize for his contributions to topology (cobordism theory, K theory ). Since 1994 he has been on the Council of the Moscow Mathematical Society. From 2001 to 2004 he was on the Council of the European Mathematical Society . In 1974 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver , but was unable to give the lecture. He is a member of the London Mathematical Society and the American Mathematical Society . Since 2006 he has been a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

He is married and has two children.

Alexander Alexandrovich Gaifullin is one of his PhD students .
