Shown is the wetland game reserve WWT Slimbridge , which is located near Slimbridge in Gloucestershire , England . It is halfway between Bristol and Gloucester and the eastern side of the mouth of the River Severn . The reserve , founded by the artist and naturalist Sir Peter Markham Scott , was opened in November 1946. Slimridge extends over around 800 hectares of pastureland, reeds, lagoons and salt marshes. A large number of water birds live there all year round. But birds that are on their way to their summer breeding grounds can also be found there. Other birds hibernate there, including white-fronted geese and whistling swans .

Slimridge is home to the largest number of ducks in the world , is also involved in research projects and is involved in international breeding programs. The nature reserve is open to the public all year round.
