content
Wild Women - Gentle Beasts documents the life and work of five female predator tamers: Namayca Bauer from France, Carmen Zander from Germany, Nadezhda and Aliya Takshantova from Russia and Anosa Kouta from Egypt, who was touring in Qatar due to political circumstances at the time of shooting. The film not only shows how the women present their shows in the spotlight, but also how they fight for their existence behind the scenes. They all work in a circus and train tigers (pikeperch), lions (Bauer and Kouta) and bears (Takshantova). Schmid shows life beyond the glittering stage shows and above all examines the reality of everyday circus life. She follows the artists in their everyday life and manages to get close to them in a respectful way. The trainers reveal their passion and deep love for their wild animals and their extraordinary profession and tell of their wishes, longings and fears. It shows how women have to exceed their physical and psychological limits on a daily basis and that the danger of death is an integral part of their calling. In contrasting images of Domina vs. Cuddly Cat and The Beauty vs. The beast is shown how sensual and at the same time exhausting the relationship between animal and artist is.
