features

The wild dry rot forms 5–15 cm wide, soft fleshy fruiting bodies that can be easily detached from the substrate and become brittle when dry. The top of the mushroom is smooth in young mushrooms, later it becomes wrinkled. The color of the fruiting bodies changes with the age of the mushroom: in young fruiting bodies it is slightly purple, then changes to mustard yellow and ends up being olive brown. The edge of the fruiting body is white-fiber and woolly, later with a purple tone.

ecology

The wild dry rot ( Serpula himantioides ) grows spread out on the rotten tree stump

The Wild Dry rot is a saprobiontischer wooden resident who grows mainly in various forests and woods at the bottom of horizontal logs and thick branches or stumps, its fruiting bodies appear in the late initial and early optimum phase. The species mainly colonizes wood that is in contact with the ground or lies in damp piles. The wild dry rot occurs less often on damp wood. It rarely appears in the interior of sheds or similar buildings, then usually brought in with firewood or similar material. Its optimal growth temperature is between 20 and 25 ° C, which means that the fungus grows around seven millimeters per day. The wild dry rot prefers to grow on softwood, hardwood is rarely populated. In Central Europe, fresh fruiting bodies appear mainly in autumn and persist into winter.

distribution

The distribution of the wild dry rot is unclear, in Europe it is found in Central and Northern Europe, in Germany it is found in all federal states.
