The IIHF Continental Cup 2007/08 was the eleventh edition of the of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . The tournament, which was held from September 19, 2007 to January 6, 2008, was attended by 17 teams from 17 countries. The final round was held from January 4th to 6th, 2008 in the Latvian capital Riga .

Two final round participants were set, the host HK Riga 2000 and Ak Bars Kazan from Russia , as representatives of the highest placed country according to the IIHF world rankings 2007, which had registered for the tournament. The two other finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.

qualification

First round

The games of the first round took place from 14th to 16th September 2007 at the Romanian Miercurea Ciuc instead. It was only played in one group, the winner of which qualifies for the second round. Since the already qualified for the second round Ukrainian team HK ATEK Kiev in bankruptcy was gone, the group second for the second round of games was invited later.

Group A

The hosts SC Miercurea Ciuc confidently reached the next round with three wins. The second placed KHL Mladost Zagreb , who scored five points, also moved into the second qualifying round.

Second round

The second round of the Continental Cup was played from October 12-14, 2007 in three groups. The matches in Group B found in Danish Aalborg held the matches of Group C in the Dutch Tilburg and the games in Group D in Polish Nowy Targ .

The winners of Group A, SC Miercurea Ciuc , qualified to participate in group D. Because actually set Ukrainian team HK ATEK Kiev in bankruptcy was gone, the Croatian team moved KHL Mladost than second in Group A after and played in group C.

Group B

In Group B, the host AaB Ishockey prevailed after three wins. In doing so, they left the Austrian champions EC Red Bull Salzburg behind.

A total of 3,100 spectators attended the six tournament games.

Group C

The tournament in Tilburg was also won by the hosts, the Tilburg Trappers . With the first victory over the Hungarian representative Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák they secured the top position, which they did not give up in the course of the tournament. The qualifier KHL Mladost Zagreb only had one point.

Group D

By a victory of the Kazakh representative Kazzinc-Torpedo in direct comparison, the defending champion retired Yunost Minsk made already in the second round. The tournament in Nowy Targ was also the only one in the second round that the host team could not win.

A total of 3,060 spectators attended the six tournament games.

Third round

The third round of the Continental Cup took place from 16 to 18 November 2007 at the French Grenoble instead.

Group E

While Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk sovereignly qualified for the final round with three wins, AaB Ishockey was able to surprisingly beat the host Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble in the final tournament game in the penalty shootout and thus also reached the Super Final in Riga . The Tilburg Trappers could not intervene in the decision and failed as the group last.

A total of 13,712 spectators attended the six tournament games.

Super final

The Super Final took place from January 4th to 6th, 2008 in Riga , Latvia . Set of goods HK Riga 2000 as host and the second in the Russian championship Ak Bars Kazan . Kazan was last year's winner of the IIHF European Champions Cup and was able to prevail in the final tournament. The first two teams in the third round were also qualified. These were on the one hand the Kazakh master Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk and on the other hand the Danish master AaB Ishockey .

After the duels on the first day, HK Riga 2000 and Ak Bars Kazan were at the top of the table. The next day, the favored team from Kazan put solely to the forefront because Riga the Kazakh team from Öskemen subject. Kazan therefore only needed one point in the final game against Riga to win another European Cup after 2007. This finally succeeded with a 6-2 victory over Riga, which - like the rest of the teams - finished the tournament with three points.

A total of 7,400 spectators attended the six tournament games.

The awards in the final tournament went to the American goalkeeper Robert Esche from tournament winner Ak Bars Kazan , the defender Ilja Nikulin also from Kazan and the Czech striker Tomáš Chlubna from the Latvian club HK Riga 2000 .

Chlubna also secured the top scorer's crown with four tournament goals. His teammate Ģirts Ankipāns and Kazan's Sergei Zinoviev finished the tournament together in first place in the scorer and submission standings with five and four points respectively. Rigas Edgars Lūsiņš had the best catch rate among the goalkeepers , who parried 91.04 percent of the shots on his goal.
