White water swimming
White water swimming refers to swimming in white water . It is one of the extreme sports due to the high risk of injury .
Emergence
White water swimming has developed as a sport within water rescue organizations , parallel to white water paddling and rafting . Since with the more frequent accidents in the water , more competent rescue workers were needed who needed swimming qualifications and therefore had to be in training .
equipment
For safety reasons, it is advisable for swimmers in white water to wear a wetsuit , life jacket and hard hat, because otherwise driftwood or underwater rocks could lead to injuries. Sturdy shoes and gloves are also helpful.
Professional canyoning organizations, such as the CIC, advise against using a life jacket in white water, as this additional buoyancy device can make it difficult or even impossible to dive into rollers. In addition, a life jacket hinders swimming movements.
Professional organizers decide whether to use the life jacket based on the selected route.
