Wilfried Ehrler

Wilfried Ehrler (born May 20, 1929 ; † February 2, 2016 ) was a German sports scientist . He was one of the "founding fathers" of the endurance three-way fight ( triathlon ) in the German Democratic Republic .

Life

Ehrler studied at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig in the 1950s . He then worked as a university lecturer at the Institute for Leisure and Recreational Sports at the DHfK. In 1972 he wrote his doctoral thesis on the subject of "Investigations into the applicability of an objectified method of needs assessment of sports facilities in different catchment areas ”.

In his academic work, Ehrler dealt with leisure games such as miniature golf, croquet, pendulum ball, pritshentennis, shuffleboard, indiaca, ring tennis and badminton. Furthermore, topics such as sporting activities in the residential area as well as in companies, the influence of the sports communities of the DTSB of the GDR on the sporting activities of the population, training-scientific aspects of athletics, popular sports aspects of skiing and the area of ​​"endurance training and health", were the focus of his sports science work. Ehrler was a member of the Committee for Recreational Sports on the World Council for Physical Education in Sports.

 Ehrler contributed the essays "The GDR Sports Badge: Between Intention and Reality" and "Triathlon in the GDR: Popular Sport Under Modernization Pressure " to the book "Everyday Sport in the GDR" published by Jochen Hinsching in 1998 .

He also dealt extensively with the sport of triathlon, initially under the name of endurance triathlon. In 1987 he brought out the book "Triathlon: Endurance three-dimensional" together with Christian Menschel and Jochen Meyer. On the occasion of his death in 2016, Ehrler was named by the German Triathlon Union (DTU) as “one of the founding fathers of triathlon in the GDR”.

As head of the "Leipzig Mile Committee", he played a decisive role in the first staging of the Leipzig Cup runs (later city ranking runs). Ehrler was called "Nestor of the Leipzig running movement". In 1984 he was one of the initiators of the first Leipzig endurance triathlon at Lake Kulkwitz . Between 1984 and 2004 he was responsible for organizing the event. After the end of the GDR, Ehrler was involved in the merger of the two professional associations from the FRG and the GDR, temporarily held the office of vice-president of the German Triathlon Union and became honorary president of the DTU in 1994.

As an active athlete, Ehrler took part in the GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf 27 times and became German champion in rugby .
