Wilgartaburg

The Wilgartaburg even Wilgartaburg, Wilgartsburg, Wiligartisburg called, is a cultural monument of a dialed rock castle in the village of Wilgartswiesen in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

The remains of the former hilltop castle are located near Wilgartswiesen before Rinnthal at around 245 meters above sea level on a foothill of the Göckelberg above the Queich . This left tributary of the Rhine rises in the Wasgau , which is formed by the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the northern part of the Vosges .

history

The Wilgartaburg is one of the earliest castles in the Palatinate (probably from the 8th or 9th century). According to an unclear source, it was initially built as a wooden castle in the late 10th or early 11th century by an abbot of the Hornbach monastery . In the Salian period (11th century) the first stone was built; another in the 12th, a last in the 13th century. The castle was probably abandoned at the end of the 13th century in favor of the better situated Falkenburg .

According to a legend, after the death of her husband, Count Wernher I, the wife of Wiligarta lived here in penance in the 8th century to atone for his dissolute life. On April 16, 828, her granddaughter, also called Wiligarta and daughter of Wernher II , gave her farm " Wiligartawisa " with all the fields, meadows and forests to the Hornbach monastery . Remnants of the wall with many beam holes and rock chambers still bear witness to the former castle complex.
