Johann Wilhelm Aschenberg (born April 24, 1769 in Reinshagen , † November 21, 1819 in Hagen ) was a German Lutheran pastor . He became known among other things as the editor of the Bergisches Taschenbuch (1798–1804) and the magazine Hermann (since 1814) as well as an author on regional history.

Life

Aschenberg was the son of a wealthy merchant and landowner. He attended the educational institution of the Brethren in Neuwied and other institutions in Saxony . He then studied Protestant theology in Rinteln from 1783 . Between 1791 and 1802 he officiated as pastor in Cronenberg . Then he was pastor and church councilor in Hagen.

He wrote several hymns. In addition to his church activities, he founded numerous associations in Cronenberg. He was active in a variety of ways as an author and poet, editor of anthologies and magazines. Together with other people, he published the Bergisches Taschenbuch between 1798 and 1804 , in which Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling also made contributions. By working in this Ernst Moritz Arndt became known beyond a narrow circle. As an author, Aschenberg also wrote articles on the history of the Bergisches Land . His outline of Bergisches history appeared in the Bergisches Taschenbuch between 1800 and 1804 . This representation has shaped the historical image of the region, but is controversial today because of historical falsifications and unaccounted for additions. A planned larger work on the history of the Bergisch region was no longer carried out. Between 1802 and 1804 he published the Niederrheinischen Blätter, five volumes of which appeared.

He was important in 1814 as the founder and publisher of the widely used magazine Hermann . He was a critic of the Napoleonic system and represented a pronounced Prussian patriotism combined with national German ideas.
