Wilhelm Bergner (born November 17, 1835 in Geesthacht ; † 1905 in Hamburg-Bergedorf ) was an industrialist and founder of the iron foundry and machine factory Bergner & Nordenberg in Hamburg-Bergedorf. Two streets in Lohbrügge and Glinde are named after him.

Bergner relocated his machine factory, which was founded in Geesthacht in 1859, to Sande near Bergedorf in Denmark in 1864. There it was renamed “ Bergedorfer Eisenwerk ” in 1867 and in 1907 it was converted into a stock corporation. Bergner was one of the first industrial manufacturers in Bergedorf.

Until about 1974, the white Bergner villa stood near the ironworks on the "Bergnerpfad" street, where he lived until his death. The villa and its outbuildings were demolished in the course of the construction of new buildings in today's "Ludwig-Rosenberg-Ring" corner of "Walter-Freitag-Straße". Only a few preserved old oaks within the apartment blocks mark the place around the former villa and its small park as well as the street layout of the Bergner Path, which no longer exists. Later the building cooperative erected a memorial nearby to commemorate the founder of the Bergedorf ironworks.

social commitment

He created an in-house health insurance company, a savings bank and, for the conditions at the time, modern workers' apartments, which later became the Bergedorf Bille e. G. led. A relief fund for employees in distress was set up on January 1, 1898 with a share capital of 50,000 marks. He was also socially committed and supported the construction of the Sander Erlöserkirche, consecrated in 1897, by donating glass windows worth 10,000 marks and a donation for the building of the pastorate amounting to 5,000 marks and saved the windmill on today's Chrysanderstrasse in Bergedorf by buying it up.

Bergner was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle in 1899 for his entrepreneurial achievements and was appointed Royal Prussian Commerzienrath .

Bergner's mausoleum, which he had built in 1900 on the cemetery of the Erlöserkirche by the Hamburg architect Hugo Groothoff , was placed under monument protection in 2000, together with the entire church grounds.

Honor

Wilhelm-Bergner-Strasse in the Hamburg districts of Bergedorf and Lohbrügge is named after Wilhelm Bergner. It was called Wilhelmstrasse until 1950, also in his honor.
