Wilhelm Bernhard Benteli
Wilhelm Bernhard Benteli (born December 5, 1839 in Schwarzenegg ; † October 5, 1924 in Bern ) was a Swiss painter , watercolorist , draftsman and art teacher .
Life
Born as the son of pastor Gottlieb Abraham Benteli and Maria Julia Lauterburg, Benteli studied from May 1, 1858, first in the sculpture class of the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich , soon switched to painting with Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Hermann Anschütz and began studying in 1860 Paris with Charles Gleyre . In 1866 he undertook a six-month study tour across Italy, visiting Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Verona, Siena, Perugia and Genoa.
Back in Switzerland he moved to Bern, where he worked as a drawing teacher at the municipal secondary school, then at the municipal grammar school and from 1871 as a teacher for drawing and painting at the newly founded art school. He also worked as a freelance landscape and portrait painter and exhibited his works at art exhibitions. He was elected to the board of the Bernese Art Society and a member of the Federal Art Commission.
