Wilhelm Brass

Wilhelm Brass (born April 14, 1926 in Cologne ; † October 8, 2011 in Porto Alegre ( Brazil )) was a German veterinarian and university professor .

Life

Wilhelm Brass fought on the Western Front from 1944 in World War II and was taken prisoner there by the US . After the war, Brass studied veterinary medicine in Hanover. In 1947 he became a member of the Corps Hannoverania Hannover. In 1951 he was with the thesis about the behavior of white blood after food intake in horses doctorate . In 1958 he qualified as a professor and was appointed private lecturer for experimental therapy and small animal diseases at the Clinic for Small Pets in Hanover. From 1959 he taught for five years as a visiting professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre. From 1965 to 1988 he was director of the clinic for small animals of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. In 1977 the passionate hunter took over the honorary management of the Institute for Wildlife Research, which was spun off as an affiliated institute in 1980 . Brass remained in charge until his retirement in 1988. From 1989 to February 2011 he was President of the Scientific Commission of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale , to which he had belonged since 1980. The focus of his work there was the international introduction of tests for hip dysplasia and the standardization of the execution of tests corresponding X-rays and their evaluation. Brass received numerous awards for its services to German and international cynology , including the highest award from the VDH , the VDH badge of honor in gold with a wreath and diamond, which was awarded to him on June 1, 1997. He was closely associated with several Brazilian universities.
