Wilhelm Brem (born November 23, 1977 in Buchloe ) is a German disabled athlete in the field of Nordic skiing .

Life

Brem grew up in Buchloe and attended elementary school in Ketterschwang . At the age of nine he switched to the elementary and secondary school for the blind in Munich. After graduating, he became a physiotherapist and has been working at the Freiburg-Black Forest Olympic Training Center since 2007 .

Career

In 1993 Brem started in the field of Nordic skiing . A year later he won his first medal at the 1994 Winter Paralympics in Lillehammer with his then companion Gerd Keuer in biathlon , and the first gold medal at the 1996 Nordic World Ski Championships for the disabled in Sunne .

From 1996 to 2002 Olaf Gruhn accompanied him . With this he won gold in biathlon and 2 times silver in cross-country skiing at the 1998 Winter Paralympics in Nagano , as well as gold in biathlon and silver in cross-country skiing at the Nordic World Ski Championships for the disabled in 2000 in Sion and gold in biathlon and bronze in cross-country skiing with Franz Lankes , at the 2002 Winter Paralympics in Salt Lake City .

He also won a bronze medal at the Winter Paralympics 2006 in Turin with his companion Ulrich Zipfel , and at the Winter Paralympics 2010 in Vancouver gold in the 12.5 km biathlon together with his companion Florian Grimm , with whom he has been running since 2007. Brem achieved a total of eight medals at the Paralympics from 1994 to 2014, three of which were gold in biathlon.

His start for Germany at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi was his sixth participation. He reached seventh place in the 7.5 km biathlon sprint for the visually impaired and ninth place over 15 km; Florian Grimm was again the accompanying runner. Brem has meanwhile ended his active career; in the Paralympics 2018 he no longer took part.
